This is a hard film to review as it is both entrancing and mesmerising in its use of music and visuals but it ultimately disappoints and becomes another artsy fartsy vanity project and disappears up its own hosepipe!
Started off well and has the amazingly talented Lucy Fry doing her thing; always a delight but it just does not seem to know what it is all about. Throw in Josh Hartnett for some inexplicable reason; what was he doing in this?
The whole film evokes a Peyote/Acid trip quite well in its use of aural and visual effects and even the inexplicable acting throws the viewer into trance mode but it ultimately goes nowhere, says nothing much and leaves the viewer cold as ice. A comment on the lives of women in small town America?

Elsewhere, a motorcycle chase along an empty Manhattan bridge is too rushed and blurry to deliver the “Fury Road” ferocity it teases, and the climactic brawl? —? which makes great use of some familiar faces, and hinges on a funny dynamic of mutual respect—is overwhelmed by a set that looks like a high-end watch commercial, and feels like a watered-down retread of the house of mirrors sequence from the end of the previous movie. Non-binary “Billions” star Asia Kate Dillon plays a stiff and slinky High Table adjudicator whos covered in Thierry Mugler coture; part referee and part femme fatale, their performance speaks to an underworld thats sustained by a mutual respect for all people so long as they dont shoot the wrong target. While this franchise is starting to feel a bit long in the tooth, such details suggest that screenwriter Derek Kolstad (here sharing credit with three other scribes) can still mine this world for plenty of new life, so long as future installments find a way to deepen the John Wick mythos instead of just stretching it out. With the significant exception of “Mission: Impossible, ” this is easily the best action franchise Hollywood has going these days, and it would be great for it to keep going with renewed focus. Ralph's story emerges in the second half of VHYes, but even his admittedly touching conversation with a haunted version of his mother isn't enough to glue together the movie's disparate collection of TV snippets, wedding details, and middle-school recordings. The fact that the film was actually shot in VHS and Beta makes for an authentic but less-than-pleasant viewing experience. If you like action movies that actually include a plot, a disaster that could actually occur and people you care about, this is your movie. The cast was perfect, the scenery/ location is gorgeous and is practically another character in the movie. The build up to the disaster had me on the edge of my seat, shouting at the TV and getting my poor dogs all upset. Yes, Day After Tomorrow, I'm looking at you when I think of the opposite of a good disaster movie. In DAT I was rooting for nature to wipe out humanity and let me just skip the utterly pointless remainder of the movie, at only 15 minutes in.

In 1987, 12-year-old Ralph (Mason McNulty) receives his very own Betacam camera for Christmas. As any kid does, he starts to record everything — late-night TV, fireworks tests, lizards — all over his parents wedding tape. What results on screen is a raucous mixtape of home videos and pop culture ephemera that sparks Ralphs imagination and budding love for storytelling. My favorite movie is 1983s “A Christmas Story, ” so when this movie also introduces a kid named Ralph whos over-enthusiastic about his Christmas present, my ears perk up. I guess in this case, “Youll shoot your eye out, kid! ” has a different connotation. I make the comparison because I think “A Christmas Story” and “VHYes” share a kinship. These films are impressionistic, building a loose series of vignettes to paint nostalgic portraits of American boyhood in their respective eras (the former set in the ‘50s, the latter in the ‘80s. Their heroes are no Disney Channel constructions, but rather honest reflections of children. Ralphie and Ralph are as gentle as they are mischievous, like so many of us. However, where Ralphie grows up sitting next to the radio, Ralph has TV. His entire world is filtered through static, thoughts racing with each click of the remote. At one moment, Ralphs parents bask in the glow of a new marriage. In a flash, a punk band rages through their set in what looks like a timid hosts parents basement. The movie channel-surfs through a found-footage anthology of blink-and-you-miss-it comedy sketches. Ralphs perspective curates a steady diet of crude and surreal parodies of Bob Ross, HSN and Richard Simmons workout tapes. McNulty plays Ralph with equal parts silliness and tenderness, reminding me of Ellar Coltranes early years in “Boyhood. ” Kerry Kenney-Silver plays Joan to such a wonderfully discomforting degree, its a toss-up for whether Id rather share the room with her or the Hal-9000. Cameron Simmons cracked me up as the bumbling porn star, whether hes delivering wood (I swear to God, thats not a metaphor) or stumbling across three sexy Swedish aliens from space. Even Robbinss parents, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, make appearances (Sarandon, in particular, has such a bizarre entrance and exit, it made me giggle. However, the films MVP is Christian Drerup, who plays Ralphs mom. She radiates such warmth, gives the movie so much of its heart. Her monologue at the end of the movie brings the whole thing home for me; it tied together so much of the films musings about experience and memory in such a naked, honest way. At times, I pull myself out of the movie to remember the immense work going into each sketch, parody and fake commercial. From over-the-top color blasts and handheld zooms to grainy three-camera setups with hazy special effects, the movie goes for broke and successfully recreates a myriad of ‘80s production designs. Avner Shiloahs editing captures Ralphs scatterbrained attention span perfectly, even down to the random frames that linger a half-second too long between cuts. Ive read comparisons of this film to a show like “Tim and Eric, ” and while I agree the two share a surreal sense of humor, Robbins controls the chaos. The transitions between segments can be non-sequiturs, but the form, the craft is always sound. I like “Tim and Eric, ” but after a while, sketches can blur into each other and melt into visual noise. Robbins approaches “VHYes” like a hip-hop producer does samples: fusing and transforming different, sometimes clashing, elements to create a mosaic. This is a movie that works best when viewed in macro, not micro. As “VHYes” progresses, it asks questions about reality, experience and our perception. By recording our experiences, do we irreparably alter the memories, and ourselves in the process? Will we grow to value life on a screen more than life on the ground? Is a growing obsession with the camera a collective defense mechanism from the problems we feel powerless to tackle? Or are we simply hopeless social misfits? Ralph has growing pains; hes developing new attitudes and questions about his parents and his creative expression. For as therapeutic as exploring new artistic mediums and passions can be, that journey can never fully satisfy, because these pleasures are ultimately finite and superficial. The camera, the screen can give us a heightened or exaggerated version of life, but it can never fully embrace it. The movies best moments are when Ralph has stepped away from the TV, alone with his thoughts. Its the balance of experience and reflection that keeps us healthy. Its the acceptance that we wont (and shouldnt) be able to capture nor bottle our most important seconds that makes living so precious. Its the knowledge that time is impossible to cling to that enriches our attempts to record it. That paradox makes our art human, and its through those imperfections, homegrown in grainy film, that “VHYes” celebrates our blissful, chaotic, reckless, childish spirit. Cast [ edit] Production [ edit] Conception and adaptation [ edit] Douglas McGrath "fell in love" with Jane Austen 's 1815 novel Emma, while he was an undergraduate at Princeton University. He believed the book would make a great film, but it was not until a decade later that he was given a chance to work on the idea. [4] After receiving an Academy Award nomination in 1995 for his work on Bullets over Broadway, McGrath decided to make the most of the moment and took his script idea for a film adaptation of Emma to Miramax Films. [4] McGrath had initially wanted to write a modern version of the novel, set on the Upper East Side of New York City. Miramax's co-chairman, Harvey Weinstein, liked the idea of a contemporary take on the novel. [4] McGrath was unaware that Amy Heckerling 's Clueless was already in production until plans for Emma were well underway. [4] Casting [ edit] McGrath decided to bring in American actress Gwyneth Paltrow to audition for Emma Woodhouse, after a suggestion from his agent and after seeing her performance in Flesh and Bone. [5] Of his decision to bring Paltrow in for the part, McGrath revealed "The thing that actually sold me on her playing a young English girl was that she did a perfect Texas accent. I know that wouldn't recommend her to most people. I grew up in Texas, and I have never heard an actor or actress not from Texas sound remotely like a real Texan. I knew she had theater training, so she could carry herself. We had many actresses, big and small, who wanted to play this part. Sure, it's an old wine packed in a brand new bottle but the result is sheer magic. Most importantly, Dabangg 3 has Salman Khan like never before. In fact, breathing fire and venom, Chulbul Pandey aka Robinhood Pandey taps Salman's star power like no film has. Dabangg 3 stands on three pillars - Salman Khan's star power, smashing stunts and super music.
In a nutshell, Dabangg 3 delivers what it promises: Entertainment in enormous doses. Prabhudheva's latest offering speaks the language that the masses comprehend. It's one formula that can never go out of fashion if handled smartly. Actually, Chulbul Pandey has come to represent the common man and that's yet another reason why you root for him, feel overjoyed and ecstatic when he triumphs in the finale. For anyone who needs to comprehend what is the on-screen meaning of Bollywood, Dabangg 3 is absolutely textbook fare.
Let's face it, Dabangg 3 has nothing ground-breaking to offer as far as the story (Salman Khan) is concerned. But what makes Dabangg 3 shine, and shine brightly, is Salman Khan's star power, which camouflages the aberrations wonderfully. The film is special for two more reasons: Anl Arasu's stunts and Sajid-Wajid's music. Talking of action scenes, Salman's introduction at the start and the fight-to-finish in the climax, when Salman's shirt tears apart and the rippling muscles and the bare-chest fight ensues, will send the masses in frenzy. To state that the action scenes are outstanding, especially the fight in the finale would be an understatement. Mark my words, the action scenes will lead to chaos at mass-dominated centres, especially at single screens. It won't be erroneous to state that the climax is worth the price of the ticket, samosa, sandwich, popcorn, nachos and cola put together.
Sajid-Wajid's music is of a mixed variety and gels wonderfully with the genre of the film. Munna Badnaam Hua track will send the viewers into raptures. The background score (Sandeep Shirodkar) is electrifying and in sync with the on-screen situations. Dialogue (Dilip Shukla and Aloke Upadhyaya) are excellent. The lines are written with equivalent flamboyance and will be greeted with claps and whistles. Mahesh Limaye's cinematography is top-notch and he makes every frame appear larger-than-life.
But Dabangg 3 is not without its share of flaws. The film stands on a thin storyline and the viewer can guess what's in store next. Besides, the film could've done without a song or two, thereby keeping its length in check (editor: Ritesh Soni. However, these are minor aberrations. For, the plusses easily outweigh and outnumber the minuses here.
The principal cast provides the much-needed sheen to Prabhudheva's vision. Salman Khan uses his fists, spews venom and threats, bullies the villain, flirts and romances, does the pelvic thrusts. in fact, he does everything that one expects from Chulbul Pandey. Honestly speaking, Dabangg 3 is a Salman Khan vehicle and the actor is the Big Boss here. You cannot imagine anyone else doing what he does. And every time he plays to the gallery, many in the audience (especially at single screens) are sure to fling the loose change on screen as a mark of appreciation for his on-screen antics. He defies logic and gets away with it! He is like a ferocious lion who roars with all his might. The show belongs to the actor, who scorches the screen every time he displays the manic anger. From a statutory warning against cigarette and gutka, mouthed by Khan, to his anti-dowry stance and a message on water conservation and a dig at demonetization at the very end, there is also ample messaging to be found in the movie.
Sonakshi Sinha's pairing with Salman looks wonderful. She is her usual chirpy and feisty self as Rajjo. She delivers the right expressions. The newcomer Saiee Manjrekar has an infectious charm and radiates confidence all through the enterprise. The character she portrays has tremendous mass appeal. Also, the desi girl image suits her impeccably. She is camera-friendly and confident to the T. Arbaaz Khan is okay. Dimple Kapadia is truly wonderful. Pramod Khanna (brother of late Vinod Khanna) is excellent. Kichcha Sudeep has a good screen presence. He is superb as the antagonist. He's venomous to the hilt! Yet another sterling act that doesn't miss a beat! He takes giant strides as an actor & gives the film the much-needed support.
On the whole, Dabangg 3 is the emblematic formula movie with distinct essentials that Indian masses yearn for. The film is for those who seek unabashed entertainment and relish masala films. Damn the indomitable critics, pseudo-intellectuals and connoisseurs of parallel cinema, this one's not for them. Dabangg 3 is for the aam junta. Entertainment guaranteed.
