There are ample clap-worthy and seeti-maar moments in Prabhudeva’s 'Dabangg 3' for Salman Khan fans to lap up. Yes, he takes off his shirt, flaunts his well-toned, perfectly-greased body and beats up the goons to pulp. The action is raw and solid, however, some action scenes (like Chulbul's introductory sequence) are unreasonably stretched. While the story is clearly predictable, in this one again, Salman’s star power, swag and style remain intact. There is an attempt to infuse comedy in the story, but it seems rather forced. The storyline is not cohesive and the narrative is loosely strung together. Sudeep is menacing as the baddie, who is out to make Chulbul’s life miserable. The South actor has a great screen presence, which makes the face-offs between Chulbul and him impactful and entertaining. Sonakshi was seen as Rajjo in the first two movies of the franchise, too, but in a film that’s primarily about a tussle between the good and the bad men, she doesn’t have much to do other than play the loving and doting wife. Saiee, who makes her debut as young Chulbul’s lady love, has a pleasant screen presence and is effective, but she could do with expressing more in the emotional scenes. Arbaaz plays his part well. The film, with a runtime of 2 hours and 42 minutes, seems very long and could have done with a tighter edit. The narrative is also interrupted by a long line-up of songs, of which, the memorable ones are 'Munna Badnam Hua' and the title track. Overall, the film has all the ingredients required for a massy masala entertainer — good action, music, drama and, of course, Salman packing all of this in one story. The portions where the actor throws in comedy while doing hardcore action scenes are nicely done. 'Dabangg 3' shows Salman in his element – throwing deadly blows at the villains amidst all the smoke, dust and fire, while you can hear chants of Hudd Hudd Dabangg in the background. And those certainly will be paisa-vasool moments for Salman Khan's fans.

In Hope Gap, Oscar-nominated screenwriter William Nicholsons second film as director, were given an all-too-familiar set-up (husband tells long-serving wife that hes leaving her for a younger woman) and the stage is set for blistering quarrels, messy untangling and two awards-aiming performances. But despite the clear dramatic potential of the wounds of divorce, proved time and time again by films ranging from An Unmarried Woman to this Oscar seasons Marriage Story, Nicholson fails to give his film the specificity and emotional depth required to make it seem necessary. Weve been here before and nothing in the films 100-minute length truly justifies why were back here again. In the coastal town of Seaford, Grace (Annette Bening) and Edward (Bill Nighy) share a modest life, a comfortably learned dynamic set firmly, perhaps boringly, in place after 33 years together. Grace is gregarious and needy, Edward reserved and serious, and while her desire for more affection and vocal reassurances might cause mild tension, her pleas have become part of the script theyre both used to playing out day after day, year after year. But when Edward urges their son Jamie (Gods Own Countrys Josh OConnor) to return for the weekend, it soon becomes clear that something is brewing. Graces paranoia over Edwards lack of eye contact and nervousness around her is suddenly, abruptly justified when he announces that hes leaving her for another woman. While theres a nervy propulsion behind these initial scenes, especially during Edwards painful pre-dump prep, the breakup happens so soon into the film that were left scratching our heads over whats to come next. It turns out the answer is largely nothing and in place of a plot, theres a repetitive cycle of crying, beach-walking and moping that might have felt less plodding if we had more investment in the couple at its centre. Their relationship is painted with recognisably broad strokes (the nagging wife and repressed husband) and despite two inarguably accomplished actors, theres a niggling disconnect. Nighys well-meaning, if unacceptably cowardly, husband is played with an affecting subtlety but a miscast Bening struggles to match him. Shes hampered with an ill-fitting British accent shes never truly comfortable with and so much of her performance is muddied by her struggle to sound believable as a Brit that little room is left for her to seem believable as a person. Its ultimately as awkward for her as it is for us. There are glimmers of insight along the way, particularly in how Grace compares a divorce to a murder and how spurned women are devalued in comparison with widows, but its mostly surface. Introducing their son as a key component is an interesting move but its never one that really pays off and Nicholsons attempts to capture twentysomething life border on embarrassing. Theres the odd excursion into the city and a handful of supporting characters but its mostly a three-hander in a limited number of locations. Aware of how stagey this might seem, Nicholson and cinematographer Anna Valdez-Hanks do offer up some stunning coastal vistas but matched with a swelling score, were left craving a narrative of equal weight and as devastating as Graces predicament is, the pathos never comes. Divorce is painful but Hope Gap isnt damn near painful enough. Hope Gap is showing at the Toronto film festival.
