The battle took place between the Maratha Empire and the Afghan army under Ahmad Shah Abdali. The invasion by the King of Afghans was supported by the Afghans of the Doab region, Najib-ud-daulah and the Nawab of Awadh, Shuja-ud-Daula. SadashivraoBhau was the third in power ranks after the King and Prime Minister of the Maratha Empire. Though widely disputed to be the exact battle spot, most historians believe that the largest and most eventful to have fought in the 18th century with possibly the largest number of fatalities took place somewhere near modern-day Sanauli Road and KaalaaAamb. The battle lasting several days involved around 1, 25, 000 troops. Though both sides had losses and gains, Ahmad Shah emerged victoriously. A considerable amount of soldiers were injured in battle and around 70, 000 were killed. The baker, a chronicle by Shuja-ud-Daulahs DiwanKashi Raj considered being the best eye witness to the even has recorded that about 40, 000 Maratha prisoners were killed mercilessly the day following the battle. The results of the battle created a minor block to the advances of the Maratha Empire in the north and also led to the destabilization of the Maratha territories for a period of around 10 years. The domination of the Maratha in the north of India was brought back by the rule of PeshwaMadhavrao who ruled the Empire during those 10 years. The Peshwa sent a large army into northern India in an expedition in 1771 which punished the Afghan powers and re-established the domination of the Marthas. In the movie, however, the Shadashivrao Bhau played by Arjun Kapoor is the commander in the army of his cousin Nanasaheb Peshwa played by Mohnish Bahl. ShadashivraoBhau is chosen by the Maratha Peshwa to lead their army to Delhi after he emerged victorious in leading the army against the Nizam of Udgir. On the other side, Ahmad Shah Abdali played by Sanjay Dutt has formed an alliance with Najib-Ud-Daula and began his way into India to defeat and cut off the growing power of the Maratha Empire. Kriti Sanon who plays ShadashivraoBhaus wife ParvatiBai accompanies him in his thousand-kilometer journey from Pune to Delhi. ShadashivraoBhau is also accompanied by his nephew who is the Peshwa heir, his cousin and Ibrahim Khan Gardi played by Nawab Khan who is his trusted aide. In their journey toward Delhi, the Maratha army form alliances with other kings which aid them in recruiting a large robust army to counter the Afghan forces equipped with one lakh soldiers. Almost mid-way, both the armies come to face each other, the Yamuna in between them. Ashutosh Gowarikers 173-minute long magnum opus has mostly received positive reviews from both the critics and the audience with C. Muraleedharans cinematography gaining applause throughout the movie for his aerial shots during the dance sequences and the extremely well shot final fight sequence. The Times of India stated that “Panipat delves into a significant chapter in history and is a war drama that lauds the unshakable bravery, courage and the strong principles of the Marathas” and gave 3. 5 out of 5 stars. Namrata Joshi of The Hindu wrote “Gowariker may have taken liberties with history, but doesnt play around with the form. He sticks to the tried and tested, the long and languorous and old-fashioned”. Monika RawalKukreja of Hindustan Times wrote “Panipat is an honest attempt at recreating the war that we only read in history books until now. Its a tribute to the Maratha community in its truest form and even it was shorter by an hour, it could have had the same impact”. The Deccan Chronicle stated that “Directors like Gowariker do no service to the nation or their audience by twisting the truth, ignoring military, diplomatic, common sense follies and rewriting history with jingoistic fervor”. India Today gave 2. 5 out of 5 stars writing “AshutoshGowariker may not be able to do grandeur like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, but he can do war. Yet, lackluster cinematography and terrible CGI mars this solid attempt. It would have worked 10 years ago”. It will take three hours of your life and a whole lot of patience to sit through this labored film” The movie created unrest among the people of Afghanistan as Panipat followed the trend set by movies like Padmaavat and Kesari in portraying their ancestors as ruthless, treacherous and brutal savages while the Marathas were portrayed to be righteous. The Consul General of Afghanistan and many Afghan journalists lashed out at this nature of the film as it promoted Islamophobia and discrimination against Afghans. Though there are shades of Ranveer Singhs Sultan AlavudinKhilji from the movie Padmaavatcan be seen in the character portrayal of Sanjay Dutt, he makes his menacing and terrifying presence felt as the Afghan invader. Mantra, MohnishBahland PadminiKolhapure all manage to shine in the screen time allotted to them. The let-down, however, was ZeenatAmansperformanceas Sakina Begum. Her portrayal of the character was lifeless and her dialogue delivery seemed like she was reading her dialogues from a teleprompter. Overall, Panipat: The Great Betrayal puts forth a layered narrative that dives deep into the complex politics, war strategies, and the importance of forming alliances prevalent during the 18th century and also neatly interweaves the love story between ShadashivraoBhau and ParvatiBai. Though the chemistry between Kriti Sanon and Arjun Kapoor in the romantic scenes, the lavish scale that garners attention in every scene of the film, the costume design of Neeta Lulla, the intricate sets and production design by Nitin Chandrakant Desai, the well-choreographed songs by Ajay Gogavale and AtulGogavale, the sound design by Stephen Gomes take the movie to a high note; the close to three hours run time of the film with too many characters and plot points makes the film a lengthy and tedious narrative. The key highlight of the film is undoubtedly the climactic war sequence which is both elaborate and gripping. MASHA ALLAH NAIM AHMAD GARHMUKTESHWAR UP INDIA. Lets just call it Ashutosh Gowarikers version of history, but even then Panipat: The Great Betrayal is a hard pill to swallow. The action starts from Shaniwarwada in Pune, the capital of the Maratha empire and moves on to Panipat - where the epic battle was fought. At 173 minutes, with an army of writers responsible for the dreary screenplay, Gowarikers Panipat seemed to have lasted as long as the war. To check the growing Maratha influence, the Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Abdali (Sanjay Dutt) is called in by the Mughals. This leads Nana Saheb Peshwa (Monish Behl) to send his trusted Sadashivrao Bhau (Arjun Kapoor) along with his own son and cavalry to forge ahead to the north that eventually leads to the Third Battle of Panipat. But everything here is burdened with Gowarikers overt preoccupation to glorify Maratha rulers and to eulogise their valour and love for Hindustan, never mind that the concept of a “nation state” as a whole came into being much later. The biases amount to almost caricaturish portrayals of many of the royals who oppose the Marathas. Except for the introductory scene of Abdali with a dagger fight and an attempted assassination attempt that the emperor squashes with barbaric rage, Sanjay Dutt is mostly out of breath and trying to make sense of all that is happening around him moving laboriously in those velvet shrugs and elaborate headgear. His questions though are most handy especially for us viewers, who are struggling to fathom who is fighting whom and for what? Actor Mantra who is impressive as the dubious Najib-ud-Daulah supplies us with details. Arjun Kapoor is a straight backed and wooden faced as Sadashivrao Bhau at war and during peace equally wooden and awkward around Kriti Sanon, his love interest who goes on to become his wife and the narrator of the tale. The absence of Sanjay Leela Bhansalis grand vision looms large in almost every frame and even if one ignores the terrible music, blaring background score and poor CGI, the fact that we never really connect with Sadashivrao and Parvati or his mission for a Maratha samrajya takes away from the over all impact of Panipat. Panipat: The Great Betrayal as its called - feels like one too without the requisite emotional playoff or enough visually arresting scenes. One such addendum was on the great Marathas. By great Marathas they meant (obvo) the intrepid, male, macho, chest-thumping desh bhakt warriors who killed and died for Hindu Rashtra. The first lesson in the skewed history of Marathas came from Sanjay Leela Bhansali whose Bajirao galloped alongside an exquisite Mastani in the 2015 war-romance. And right now, on our screens, we have Ashutosh Gowarikers Panipat: The Great Betrayal, which tells the story of Sadashivrao Bhau who lead the Maratha army to battle Ahmed Shah Abdali. Or into whats better known as the Third Battle of Panipat. Panipats story is narrated by the voiceover of a lady. Shes not Bharat Mata, yet she could very well be. In Punes Shaniwar Wada, Nana Saheb Peshwa (Mohnish Bahl as the Maratha Prime Minister) presides. He has a wife, Gopikabai (Padmini Kohlapure) whose facial contortions tell us that she was not all sweet and soft on the hulking Sadashivrao Bhau (Arjun Kapoor) who he is being feted and fawned upon for winning several wars and qilas. Though there are some aghast faces in the durbar when Sadashivrao presents his prisoner, Ibrahim Khan Gardi (Nawab Shah) as the man who will head the Maratha armys cannon ball and fire brigade, upon his cajoling all agree. Sadashivrao has no designs on the gaddi. He doesnt even seem to have a healthy desire for the girl with the longest waist in Shaniwar Wada. Parvati (Kriti Sanon) flits around him carrying ubtans and jadi-booti to heal his wounds, but he is happy to focus on completing 1, 500 Surya Namaskars and sing songs of Mard Maratha while prancing about in low-waist frocks. But since Parvati insists so much and then goes home rooth-ke, Sadashivrao goes after her and they wed. Marathas were Pune people, but their power extended to Delhi whose Mughal king was their puppet. But one man in Delhi, Najib ad-Dawlah, wanted more and so he invited his pal in Afghanistan, Ahmed Shah Abdali (Sanjay Dutt) to come to India and defeat the Marathas. Abdali, a frequent visitor to India, obliged since he wasnt really having a jolly time in his Kadhahar palace where every time he sat on the peacock throne and put on the crown with the Kohinoor, someone would attack him. Word reached the Marathas who, it seems, didnt have the soldiers, the stamina or the funds to travel so far up north. Yet, after much bombast about desh and Maratha mard from Sadashivrao, he is given 40, 000 troops and sent off. Except that along tagged Parvati and about 1, 00, 000 pilgrims, all of whom he had to feed and protect. Then it begins, the game of trying to stitch together a maha gathbandhan in which Najib beat Sadashivrao, and the few allies that he did have were lost because of his big fat Maratha ego. Sadashivrao and his entourage march to Delhi, which they win, and then pause to sing a song while the jhanda, in true Ekta Kapoor style, rises up again and again… In Kunjpura, Marathas beat one contingent of the Afghans, but the Yamuna being in spate and all, stalls both the armies on either side, giving Abdali and Sadashivrao enough time to stare at each other through their one-eye binoculars. But then Abdali outsmarts the Marathas and what follows is a long-drawn battle which for the longest time felt like the slowest match at Wimbledon. One gola of barood flies from this side to devastate that side. Then the devastated side despatches one gola barood to devastate the other… And so it goes on till Sadashiv is forced off his haathi for a dramatic sword fight. Ashutosh Gowarikar has made eight films, of which three are memorable, including Lagaan, which set the gold standard of myth-making. But Gowariker is no Bhansali. This means, thankfully, that his bigotry is in check. He doesnt turn all Muslims into meat-chomping barbarians lusting after Bharatiya naris and zameen. But he also doesnt have Bhansalis artistry and skill to tell his story with seductive cinematic sorcery and dramatic highs. He has built elaborate sets and decks up all his yoddhas and ladies in exquisite clothes, accessorised by pearls and jewels that you cant help but ogle at. And yet he doesnt milk that beauty. His laborious screenplay is so devoid of drama and thrill that even dramatic scenes lack tension. The films dialogue (by poet Ashok Chakradhar) are rather banal. Characters flit in and out of the frame saying their dialogue, but none of them acquire a personality. Not even Sadashirao and Abdali. Arjun Kapoor gets a lot of screen time, but is just adequate. Kriti Sanon is pretty and pretty decent. But their chemistry and biology is non-existent. Sanjay Dutt is terrible and pointless. He should have been sent off to get a shave and have a bath instead. Panipat: The Great Betrayal is a proudly Marathi enterprise. Based on a book by T. S. Shejwalkar, it is directed by Gowariker and part produced by Rohit Shelatkar, a “London-based pharma magnet”. That it released on December 6, the day Babri Masjid was reduced to rubble 27 years ago, is not entirely coincidental. In New India, its a date that is being written in a happy font. If you have studied Indian history, you will balk at the story that Gowariker tries to sell here, especially when you realise that the great betrayal the film insinuates is actually by the writer-director himself. Gowariker and his three screenplay writers have kept the names of the key players intact, but have taken leave of facts to create fictitious fiction about an epic, bloody battle and its main protagonists. Panipat does show us how desperate Abdali was at one point not to fight, even trying to negotiate with Sadashivrao, and the proud Maratha not agreeing to his terms, but it omits the real reasons why Marathas lost the battle and changed the course of Indias history. Sadashivrao did not have allies because he either rejected them (Jats) or ignored them (Sikhs and Rajputs. The only betrayal was by Shuja-Ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh, who was convinced by Najib and Abdali to join the “army of Islam”. The film also tries to obscure the real reason the Marathas finally declared war on Abdali on January 13, 1761 — it was because the Maratha chiefs begged Sadashivrao to be allowed to die in battle rather than perish by starvation. Gowarikers Panipat claims that Abdali wrote a letter of commendation, hailing the brave Sadashivrao. Not true. But worse is Gowarikers pronouncement at the end, that after the 3rd Battle of Panipat, Abdali never returned to India. Hain. This was Abdalis 5th attack on India. Two more invasions, involving at least five more battles, ensued, including the Sikh Massacre of 1762. Directors like Gowariker do no service to the nation or their audience by twisting the truth, ignoring military, diplomatic, common sense follies and rewriting history with jingoistic fervour. They condemn us to repeat historical wrongs.

SYNOPSIS A historical period drama that recounts the events that led up to and unfolded during the Third Battle of Panipat between the Maratha Empire and the Durrani Empire in 1761. Movie stream panipat: the great betrayal lyrics. The main reason behind the flop of panipath movie is Mr Arjun Kapoor. Nonika Singh The Third Battle of Panipat, fought in 1761, is testimony as much to the might of Ahmad Shah Abdali as the valour of his adversary the Maratha Empire. What for many of us might be a one-line note in history books transforms into a full-fledged story replete with background and detail. Ashutosh Gowariker, who has a penchant for translating history onto silver screen, brings to us this fascinating battle. Though history, it is often said, is written from the victors point of view, he glorifies the vanquished. The hero here is Sadashiv Rao Bhahu, a Peshwa (Arjun Kapoor) who decides to take on Ahmad Shah Abdali after he is invited by disgruntled elements in India. Sure India was not India back in the 18th century but the idea of Hindostan both Gowariker and his protagonist uphold and float with the secular fabric intact. Though Marathas chant Har Har Mahadev with gusto, Gowariker does not make this a Hindu-Muslim battle and certainly does not feed Islamophobia.  Early on in the film, he establishes how traitors are born in every community. Clearly treachery is a thread that runs through the film but Marathas are let down not just by Shuja–ud–Daulah (Kunal Kapoor) but also by Hindu rulers, a few of them on the battleground itself. Indeed, no one can take issues with Gowarikers intentions or his ambition to take us back into the lanes of history. But, it is in trying to strike a balance between historical veracity and the commerce of cinema that he fails. Much of the film as expected is spent in building up the romance between Sadhashiv and Parvati (Kriti Sanon. No doubt, Kriti looks beautiful and has a meaty part too. The film also boasts of two heroines of yesteryear, Padmini Kolhapure and Zeenat Aman. Zeenat, in a small but significant part of Sakina Begum, retains the grace of her youth but doesn't quite stand up to be counted. Padmini shows the same spark that distinguished her in her heydays but is hemmed in by the archetype that her role demands. Much here follows the hackneyed. Marathas breaking into a song every now and then doesnt help except introduce us to the scale of those times and the opulence of the sets. The treatment of the film is rich and the grandeur of those times comes across though not in the same fashion as a Bhansali film. With a smattering of Marathi, the language just about passes muster.  Words like gathbandhan shatbhandhan stand out like a sore thumb. Even Abdali (Sanjay Dutt) is introduced with a  rather insipid one-liner.  Unlike Khilji played to menacing perfection by Ranveer Singh in Padamavaat, Abdali is not so demonised. But then despite looming large on the screen, Sanjay Dutt fails to create a solid impact. And that is the biggest problem of the film.  For a film that recreates an epic battle, it doesnt create a powerful impression. Even on the battle ground, everything is spelt out thus diluting the otherwise formidable battle scene formations. Since it all finally boils down to eulogising the bravery of one man Sadashiv, the bloodbath leaves you more cold than emotive. Making a historical, we all know, requires tremendous hard work, research and money. If only Gowariker had added astute skills to his armoury we would not have been forced to say loves labour lost. For, while history stands as witness to Marathas loss, despite their peerless courage, we hate to see Gowariker lose a cinematic battle. More so for alongside goes the earnest endeavour of Arjun Kapoor who looks the part but cant rise above the film.

Now I've always had faith in Ashutosh Gworikar's ditectorial skills depite his last few setbacks so I decided to watch the movie and I was pleasantly impressed. I will not go towards the portrayal of the two sides cause I already expected it to be twisted along with some factual inconsistencies here and there. The first point- despite being a lengthy film solely based on war, the movie kept me hooked. The narration style did it for me. Arjun Kapoor was also decent in his role and for a change Hus body actually looked realistic for a warrior in the era (keeping in mind figures like Mansingh. Secondly- Kriti Sanon! I've never been her fan but she really impressed me with this film. She does the narration of the entire events and her diction is really good. Though her character is generally also very likeable and interesting kriti really does justice to it. From her portrayal to that little fight scene towards the end, I think she was the star of the film. There is a scene towards the end where Arjun's character makes Kriti's character promise of not committing Sati if he were to pass away. This in contrast to SLB's blatant glorification of Jauhar was a fresh take. A primary setback for me apart from the obvious was that the 'great betrayal' was not that great at all? Like I didn't find it too grand for what the audience was anticipating. However, I would recommend this film to anyone any day over Pati-Patni (I know they're different genres can't compare, but this is my responsibility as a movie goer lol.
