Interesting read and explains why our supreme court might be more an more like politicians in robes. The famously reticent Supreme Court justice opens up about his life and career in Michael Pack's documentary. It turns out that Clarence Thomas can speak after all. The famously reticent Supreme Court justice opens up big time in the new documentary by Michael Pack, which will receive a theatrical release before airing on PBS this spring. The result of some 30 hours of interviews conducted by the filmmaker with Thomas and his wife, Ginny, Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words lives up to its title. Composed nearly entirely of its principal subject recounting his life story directly to the camera, the film will inevitably thrill conservatives while driving liberals up the wall. If it were paired on a double bill with RBG, you could imagine loud arguments breaking out at the theater. If you're wondering why Thomas is finally breaking his vow of silence, it may be due to the fact that he felt comfortable cooperating with Pack, a conservative filmmaker who's collaborated with Steve Bannon and was nominated by President Trump for the position of chief executive officer of the U. S. Agency for Global Media. So it's not like he was walking into the lion's den. Covering much of the biographical material contained in his 2007 memoir My Grandfather's Son, Thomas describes his impoverished upbringing in rural Georgia (cue Louis Armstrong singing "Moon River, " composed by Savannah's own Johnny Mercer). Raised largely by his grandparents, Thomas entered a seminary and considered becoming a priest, only to abandon the idea when a white fellow student made an offensive remark expressing happiness at Martin Luther King Jr. 's assassination. That ultra-sensitivity and tendency toward whiplash ideological changes becomes highly apparent through the course of the film. Thomas became radicalized for a while, participating in anti-Vietnam War rallies and chanting about freeing Angela Davis. Then, after attending Holy Cross College and Yale Law School, he became, as he describes himself, a "lazy libertarian. " (Cue the inevitable clip from the film version of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead). The only job offer he received after graduating came from Jack Danforth, then Missouri's Attorney General, but Thomas says he hated the idea of working for a Republican. Nonetheless, he became the state's Assistant Attorney General, only to leave the position shortly afterward and work as a corporate lawyer for Monsanto. He later moved to Washington and became a legislative aide for Danforth, who had been elected senator. By then, Thomas had fully embraced the Republican agenda, voting for Reagan in 1980 because of his desire to see an end to the "social engineering of the '60s and '70s. " His rise after that was swift. When Justice Thurgood Marshall retired, George Bush nominated him to fill the seat and, well, you know the rest. What comes through loud and clear during the documentary is that Thomas has lost none of the anger and bitterness he displayed during that time. "This is about the wrong kind of black guy, he has to be destroyed, " he says about those who opposed his nomination, playing the same card as when he famously testified that his hearing represented a "high-tech lynching for uppity blacks. " He bitterly compares himself to the character of Joseph K in Franz Kafka's The Trial, as the film dutifully provides a clip of Anthony Perkins emoting in the film version. When asked if he watched Anita Hill's testimony, he makes a disgusted face and says, "Oh, God, no! " By the time he likens himself to Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird (you guessed it, another clip), you start to wonder if there isn't any martyr he doesn't identify with. At least he eventually made peace with his travails. When asked how he felt when he was finally confirmed, Thomas sarcastically replies, "Whoop-de-damn-do. " Responding to a question about his famous unwillingness to engage with lawyers making arguments before the Supreme Court, Thomas explains, "The referee in the game should not be a participant in the game. " Sounds reasonable enough, except it flies in the face of centuries of tradition at the highest court in the land. Periodically throughout the film, his spouse, whom he lovingly describes as "a gift from God, " weighs in on various topics. Her personal observations add little of substance to the proceedings, but her unwavering support for her husband comes through loud and clear. A revealing moment comes when Thomas waxes poetic about driving his motor home through Middle America — or "real America, " as he calls it — and hanging out with "regular people" in Walmart parking lots. There's no danger of running into liberal elites there. A scene late in the film, showing him chatting and laughing with his personally selected law clerks, illustrates that he certainly lives up to his long-expressed position against affirmative action. The group doesn't include a single person of color. Despite its obvious lack of objectivity, Clarence Thomas: In His Own Words proves an undeniably important historical document, if only for the rare opportunity it provides to hear from its subject directly. Unfortunately, the unintentional portrait it paints is hardly a flattering one, although obviously many will disagree. You are here: Home / Blog / Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words One of the shyest Supreme Court Justices speaks candidly in a new documentary that will be released on Friday, Jan. 31: Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words. Thomas is known for staying quiet during Supreme Court oral arguments and giving few, if any, interviews to the press. (He explains the former in the documentary. ) Even those who think they know something of Thomas’s life will likely find some surprises revealed in the film. Thomas speaks of his life born to a poor Georgia family where English was a second language. He went hungry, often had no bed to sleep in and wandered the streets. The film traces how he became interested in seminary, discovered racism in the then-all-white Catholic church culture, and became a radical and “angry black man” (his words). Watch the preview of “Created Equal” by clicking below: In “Created Equal, ” Thomas describes his sharp turnaround from anger and hate to an attitude of love and acceptance. He also talks about his contentious Supreme Court confirmation that was marred by 11th hour accusations lodged by Anita Hill, a former employee, who claimed Thomas had brought up unwanted sexually-tinged conversations with her. Thomas says that because he is conservative, he was viewed as “not the right black man” in the eyes of liberals who targeted him with relentless attacks no matter his accomplishments. Thomas’s wife, Ginni, appears with him in the documentary. To find out where “Created Equal” will be playing, check out the link below: Filmmakers Michael Pack (left), Gina Cappo Pack (center), Faith Jones (right) Below is the description from the filmmaker: With unprecedented access, the producers interviewed Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife, Virginia, for over 30 hours of interview time, over many months. Justice Thomas tells his entire life’s story, looking directly at the camera, speaking frankly to the audience. After a brief introduction, the documentary proceeds chronologically, combining Justice Thomas’ first person account with a rich array of historical archive material, period and original music, personal photos, and evocative recreations. Unscripted and without narration, the documentary takes the viewer through this complex and often painful life, dealing with race, faith, power, jurisprudence, and personal resilience. In 1948, Clarence Thomas was born into dire poverty in Pin Point, Georgia, a Gullah- speaking peninsula in the segregated South. His father abandoned the family when Clarence was two years old. His mother, unable to care for two boys, brought Clarence and his brother, Myers, to live with her father and his wife. Thomas’ grandfather, Myers Anderson, whose schooling ended at the third grade, delivered coal and heating oil in Savannah. He gave the boys tough love and training in hard work. He sent them to a segregated Catholic school where the Irish nuns taught them self-discipline and a love of learning. From there, Thomas entered the seminary, training to be a priest. As the times changed, Thomas began to rebel against the values of his grandfather. Angered by his fellow seminarians’ racist comments following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and disillusioned by the Catholic Church’s general failure to support the civil rights movement, Thomas left the seminary. His grandfather felt Thomas had betrayed him by questioning his values and kicked Thomas out of his house. In 1968, Thomas enrolled as a scholarship student at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts. While there, he helped found the Black Student Union and supported the burgeoning Black Power Movement. Then, Thomas’s views began to change, as he saw it, back to his grandfather’s values. He judged the efforts of the left and liberals to help his people to be demeaning failures. To him, affirmative action seemed condescending and ineffective, sending African-American students to schools where they were not prepared to succeed. He watched the busing crisis in Boston tear the city apart. To Thomas, it made no sense. Why, he asked, pluck poor black kids out of their own bad schools only to bus them to another part of town to sit with poor white students in their bad schools? At Yale Law School, he felt stigmatized by affirmative action, treated as if he were there only because of his race, minimizing his previous achievements. After graduating in 1974, he worked for then State Attorney General John Danforth in Missouri, eventually working in the Reagan administration, first running the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Education and then the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In 1990, he became a judge on the U. S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In 1991, President George H. W. Bush nominated Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. His confirmation hearings would test his character and principles in the crucible of national controversy. Like the Bork hearings in 1987, the Democrats went after Thomas’ record and his jurisprudence, especially natural law theory, but also attacked his character. When that failed, and he was on the verge of being confirmed, a former employee, Anita Hill, came forth to accuse him of sexual harassment. The next few days of televised hearings riveted the nation. Finally, defending himself against relentless attacks by the Democratic Senators on the committee, Thomas accused them of running “a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas. ” After wall-to-wall television coverage, according to the national polls, the American people believed Thomas by more than a 2-1 margin. Yet, Thomas was confirmed by the closest margin in history, 52-48. In his 27 years on the court, Thomas’s jurisprudence has often been controversial—from his brand of originalism to his decisions on affirmative action and other hot button topics. Critical journalists often point out that he rarely speaks in oral argument. The public remains curious about Clarence Thomas—both about his personal history and his judicial opinions. His 2007 memoir, My Grandfather’s Son, was number one on The New York Times’ bestseller list. Chopra Written by Kamleshwar Starring Sanjeev Kumar Vidya Sinha Ranjeeta Music by Ravindra Jain Release date 7 July 1978 Running time 141 minutes Country India Language Hindi Pati Patni Aur Woh ( transl.  The husband, the wife and the mistress) is a 1978 Hindi movie produced and directed by B. Chopra. The film stars Sanjeev Kumar, Vidya Sinha, Ranjeeta Kaur, and in guest appearances Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh and Parveen Babi. The film was remade under the same name in 2019 starring Kartik Aaryan, Bhumi Pednekar and Ananya Pandey. The film was directed by Mudassar Aziz and produced by Bhushan Kumar. Plot [ edit] The film starts off indicating the parallels of the story with that of Adam & Eve. Here, Adam is Ranjeet, Eve is Sharda while the apple is Nirmala. Ranjeet is newly employed in a company, whose pay scales can be gauged from the fact that he goes to work on a bicycle. However, this bicycle itself brings him face-to-face with Sharda, when he bumps into her by accident. Sharda's bicycle gets badly damaged & Ranjeet drops her off. The same evening, Ranjeet goes to the wedding of his friend Abdul Karim Durrani ( Asrani), a co-worker & a poet. Sharda is also present at the ceremony. Sharda & Ranjeet's love blossoms from there & soon they get married. In the course of a few years, Ranjeet is Sales Manager of the company and father of a son. Sharda & Ranjeet are still living in marital bliss. That is, until Nirmala, Ranjeet's new secretary, shows up. Ranjeet is inexplicably attracted to Nirmala. She is an honest girl who is trying to make two ends meet. She is much more beautiful compared to Sharda. But most of all, she knows nothing about Ranjeet's true intentions & his married life. Ranjeet is initially upset with his thoughts about her, but finally gives in. He carefully plans his further steps. He pretends to be the helpless grieving husband of a cancer stricken wife, who won't live much longer. Nirmala feels sorry for him, thus making it easier for him to get close to her. Nobody, not Sharda, not even his closest friend, suspects a thing. One day, Ranjeet bluffs to Sharda that he will be late coming home as he has a meeting. He takes Nirmala out to dinner. Next day, Sharda finds Nirmala's handkerchief, with lipstick marks on it, in Ranjeet's pocket. She immediately confronts Ranjeet, who makes up a story about a co-worker whose handkerchief he may have accidentally taken. Sharda reluctantly believes him. Ranjeet decides to take his next steps more carefully. Sharda too starts thinking that her fears were unfounded. Ranjeet makes even more interesting back up plans: He prepares two books of poetry, professing his love. The poems are the same in both, only one book contains Nirmala's name, and the other contains Sharda's. Ranjeet courts Nirmala without Sharda's knowledge. The turning point comes when Sharda sees him in a hotel with Nirmala. She later asks him about his meeting, about which the clueless Ranjeet lies. Sharda's fears are confirmed. She starts spying on him & Nirmala, taking incriminating pictures. After sufficient evidence is obtained, she secretly meets Nirmala, posing as a journalist. Nirmala, who hasn't seen Ranjeet's "ailing wife" yet, thinks Sharda intends to blackmail her. But Sharda reassures her that she won't. Nirmala spills all the beans, upon which Sharda reveals her true identity. Meanwhile, Ranjeet gets another promotion & rushes home happily to tell his wife about it. Sharda catches him unawares and lets him know that he is busted. Ranjeet does not know what has hit him. He turns round, only to see Nirmala behind him. Sharda tells him that she is leaving him & the divorce papers will be soon sent to him. Sharda & Nirmala console each other. Ranjeet calls upon his friend & lies that Nirmala has said some malicious lies to Sharda about him. Ranjeet's friend sides with him & lies about Nirmala's character. Sharda exposes Ranjeet in front of him as well, with help of the evidence she has collected. Sharda tells Ranjeet to choose either her or Nirmala. Ranjeet quietly gives Nirmala some money & lies to her, in a last-ditch attempt at damage control. But honest Nirmala returns the money to Sharda, making things even worse for Ranjeet. Sharda prepares to walk out on Ranjeet, while Nirmala resigns and leaves Ranjeet as well. Sharda comes to visit Ranjeet one last time, when their innocent son asks what is happening. Sharda decides to give Ranjeet another chance, if only for their son and soon life comes back on track. But soon another secretary( Parveen Babi) joins the office & Ranjeet tries to resort to his antics once more. Just by coincidence, Ranjeet's friend suddenly walks in & Ranjeet backs off, taking this as a warning. The 1985 war movie "Come and See" portrays the cheerful innocence of a young boy, Florya) who volunteers to fight for his home town, but is robbed of said innocence in the process of doing so.
Rather than focusing on the well known historical events of the battles fought by the Red Army, this movie shows the battle in a small province known as Byelorussia (known currently as the Republic of Belarus) and their citizens who fought to protect it.
Klimov accentuates the use of sound effects to further intensify the gruesome and shocking scenes shown in this film. Just like in "Saving Private Ryan" Klimov allows us to hear the deafening ringing from the characters perspective when bombs are dropped. Also, the scene where Florya and Glasha return to Florya's village, flies can be heard buzzing around, which then shows a scene of a pile of corpses. Klimov also uses an eerie background sound in certain scenes which really sets the mood for this movie.
Overall I thought this was a great movie. It had me feeling many different emotions, and left me wondering what happened to the protagonist after it was over. I definitely recommend it.

I love war movies. I always have. Growing up, I loved Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, Thin Red Line, the list goes on. These film, while all very telling, are not "Come and See."
Directed by Elem Klimov, this tale which follows a boy, Floria, as he discovers and entrenches himself in the perils of World War 2 is not for the faint of heart or the casual mind. Shot against a backdrop of World War 2 Russia, this film will show you everything the aforementioned American made films do not and likely won't ever. Very dark by nature, immaculately styled, and grim in authenticity, this film combines some of the best qualities of cinema and slaps you in the face for two and a half hours.
Many time during the film did I cringe as I felt as if I were growing up through the war-torn eyes of Floria. I felt for him, yet I also felt my soul harden as his had. A female character, Glasha, also had me mesmerized in such a gruesome, uncomfortable way.
This film is not the most touched I have ever been by a film of this genre, but I could definitely feel the nuances of finding your way through a battlefield the first time. It is something I doubt I will ever feel again from a film. It does lack the typical Hollywood overly eccentric, dumbed-detail version of war- the kind of script that has you crying because three Ryan Brothers have given way to war and only one remains. But, this film one up's that on the level of which you can come to understand how understanding war can be such a traumatizing and inhumane experience and you can understand a little better the cost our freedom has come at.

Let us create a movie that shows a composite of morality and chivalry shown in battle coming from all sides. For example, were there Red Army soldiers who intervened to protect Eastern European and German women from rape and murder? Were there German soldiers who intervened to stop mass shootings of civilians in conquered countries? Were there Japanese soldiers who intervened to stop torture of captured enemy soldiers? Were there American soldiers who protected the lives of German soldiers who officially surrendered? One good example is from the book, A Higher Call, where a German ace pilot escorted a severely destroyed but flying Allied bomber back to England. In war, codes of honor, morality, and chivalry illustrate humanity at its finest in the hellish heat of fighting for survival. There are great lessons to learn from real history and not from Hollywood lies and deceit. Thoughts from the group.

Take off probably the first 5 on your list and add Platoon, The Pacific, Saving Private Ryan (besides all the actors being too old) The Big Red One and Das Boot (as others have said here. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. ” Invoking Death and Hell was precisely the intention of Elem Klimov, who experienced the brutalities of war as a child in Stalingrad, and his cowriter Ales Adamovich, who fought as a partisan in Belorussia and witnessed the systematic burning of hundreds of villages and the massive extermination of civilians. To mark the 40th anniversary of the Great Victory, they wanted to remind the world of the fascist genocide in Belorussia that resulted in over one million deaths, and did so in the most visceral, hyper-realistic style possible that is nevertheless graced with a strange, terrible lyricism. Their harrowing journey through hell, as seen through the eyes of a teenage Belarussian partisan, exploded like a bomb upon its release both in Soviet Union and abroad, and quickly gained fame as one of the greatest antiwar pictures of all times.

Yanchenko Cinematography A. Rodionov Edited by V. Belova Production company Mosfilm Belarusfilm Distributed by Sovexportfilm Release date July 1985 ( Moscow) Running time 142 minutes [1] Country Soviet Union [2] Language Belarusian Russian German Come and See ( Russian: Иди и смотри, Idi i smotri; Belarusian: Ідзі і глядзі, Idzi i hlyadzi) is a 1985 Belarusian film directed by Elem Klimov filmed in the Soviet Union, with a screenplay written by Klimov and Ales Adamovich based on the 1978 book I Am from the Fiery Village [3] (original title: Я из огненной деревни, [4] Ya iz ognennoj Derevni, 1977) by Adamovich et al.. [5] The film stars Aleksei Kravchenko and Olga Mironova. [6] Come and See is generally viewed as one of the most important anti-war movies ever made, and one of the great World War II movies, with the most historically accurate depictions of the crimes on the Eastern Front. The film focuses upon the Nazi German occupation of Belarus, and primarily upon the events witnessed by a young Belarusian partisan teenager named Flyora, who—against his parents' wishes—joins the Belarusian resistance movement, and thereafter depicts the Nazi atrocities and human suffering inflicted upon the Eastern European villages' populace. The film mixes hyper-realism with an underlying surrealism, and philosophical existentialism with poetical, psychological, political and apocalyptic themes. Come and See had to fight eight years of censorship from the Soviet authorities before the film was finally allowed to be produced in its entirety to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II, and was a major box-office hit, with 28, 900, 000 admissions in the Soviet Union alone. The film was selected as the Soviet entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 58th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. [7] Title [ edit] The original Belarusian title of the film derives from Chapter 6 of The Apocalypse of John, where in the first, third, fifth, and seventh verse is written "ідзі і глядзі" [8] (English: "Come and see", Greek: Ἐρχου καὶ ἴδε, Erchou kai ide) [9] as an invitation to look upon the destruction caused by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. [10] [11] Chapter 6, verses 7–8 have been cited as being particularly relevant to the film: And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see! And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. Plot [ edit] In 1943, two Byelorussian boys dig in a sand-filled trench looking for abandoned rifles in order to join the Soviet partisan forces. Their village elder warns them not to dig up the weapons as it will arouse the suspicions of the Germans. One of the boys, Flyora, finds an SVT-40 rifle, though the both of them are seen by an Fw 189 flying overhead. The next day, partisans arrive at Flyora's house to conscript him. Flyora becomes a low-rank militiaman and is ordered to perform menial tasks. When the partisans are ready to move on, an old partisan says that he wants to stay behind because his boots are falling apart. The partisan commander, Kosach, orders the old man to swap boots with Flyora and for Flyora to remain behind at the camp. Bitterly disappointed, Flyora walks into the forest weeping and meets Glasha, a young girl working as a nurse in the camp, and the two bond before the camp is suddenly attacked by German paratroopers and dive bombers. Flyora is partially deafened from explosions before the two hide in the forest to avoid the German soldiers. Flyora and Glasha travel to his village, only to find his home deserted and covered in flies. Denying that his family is dead, Flyora believes that they are hiding on a nearby island across a bog. As they run from the village in the direction of the bogland, Glasha glances across her shoulder, seeing a pile of executed villagers' bodies stacked behind a house, but does not alert Flyora. The two become hysterical after wading through the bog, where Glasha then screams at Flyora that his family are actually dead in the village. They are soon met by Roubej, a partisan fighter, who takes them to a large group of villagers who have fled the Germans. Flyora sees the village elder, badly burnt by the Germans, who tells him that he witnessed his family's execution and that he should not have dug up the rifles. Flyora accepts that his family is dead and blames himself for the tragedy. Roubej takes Flyora and two other men to find food at a nearby warehouse, only to find it being guarded by German troops. During their retreat, the group unknowingly wanders through a minefield resulting in the deaths of the two companions. That evening Roubej and Flyora sneak up to an occupied village and manage to steal a cow from a collaborating farmer. However, as they escape across an open field, Roubej and the cow are shot and killed by a German machine gun. The next morning, Flyora attempts to steal a horse and cart but the owner catches him and instead of doing him harm, he helps hide Flyora's identity when SS troops approach. Flyora is taken to the village of Perekhody, where they hurriedly discuss a fake identity for him, while the SS unit (based on the Dirlewanger Brigade) accompanied by Ukrainian collaborators surround and occupy the village. Flyora tries to warn the townsfolk they are being herded to their deaths, but is forced to join them inside a church. Flyora and a young woman bearing a strong resemblance to Glasha manage to escape; the young woman is dragged by her hair across the ground and into a truck to be gang raped, while Flyora is forced to watch as grenades are thrown into the church before it is set ablaze and shot. A German officer points a gun to Flyora's head to pose for a picture before leaving him to slump to the ground as the soldiers leave. Flyora later wanders out of the scorched village in the direction of the Germans, where he discovers they had been ambushed by the partisans. After recovering his jacket and rifle, Flyora comes across the young woman who had also escaped the church in a fugue state and covered in blood after having been gang-raped and brutalized. Flyora returns to the village and finds that his fellow partisans have captured eleven of the Germans and their collaborators, including the commander, an SS-Sturmbannführer. While some of the captured men including the commander plead for their lives and deflect blame, a young fanatical officer bluntly tells the captors that their people have no right to exist and they will carry out their mission. Kosach then forces most of the collaborators to douse the Germans with a can of petrol but the disgusted crowd shoots them all before they can be set on fire. As the partisans leave, Flyora notices a framed portrait of Adolf Hitler in a puddle and proceeds to shoot it numerous times. As he does so, a montage of clips from Hitler's life play in reverse, but when Hitler is shown as a baby on his mother 's lap, Flyora stops shooting and cries. “ We are obliged to exterminate the population—this is part of our mission to protect the German population. I have the right to destroy millions of people of a lower race who breed like worms. ” —  Adolf Hitler, 1941 [12] In the final scene, a partisan officer calls out to a low-ranking recruit. Flyora turns, but an obedient youth nearby rushes past him, and Flyora realizes he is now a full partisan. He then catches up and blends in with his comrades, marching through the woods as snow blankets the ground. As they disappear into the birch forest, a title informs: "628 Belorussian villages were destroyed, along with all their inhabitants. " [13] Cast [ edit] Aleksey Kravchenko as Flyora Olga Mironova as Glasha/Glafira Liubomiras Laucevičius as Kosach (voiced by Valeriy Kravchenko) Vladas Bagdonas as Roubej Jüri Lumiste as young German officer Evgeniy Tilicheev as Ukrainian collaborator and translator Viktor Lorents as the German commander Production and release [ edit] Klimov co-wrote the screenplay with Ales Adamovich, who fought with the Belarusian partisans as a teenager. According to the director's recollections, work on the film began in 1977: The 40th anniversary of the Great Victory was approaching. [3] [14] [15] The management had to be given something topical. I had been reading and rereading the book I Am from the Fiery Village, which consisted of the first-hand accounts of people who miraculously survived the horrors of the fascist genocide in Belorussia. Many of them were still alive then, and Belorussians managed to record some of their memories onto film. I will never forget the face and eyes of one peasant, and his quiet recollection about how his whole village had been herded into a church, and how just before they were about to be burned, an officer gave them the offer: "Whoever has no children can leave". And he couldn't take it, he left, and left behind his wife and little kids... or about how another village was burned: the adults were all herded into a barn, but the children were left behind. And later, the drunk men surrounded them with sheepdogs and let the dogs tear the children to pieces. And then I thought: the world doesn't know about Khatyn! They know about Katyn, about the massacre of the Polish officers there. But they don't know about Belorussia. Even though more than 600 villages were burned there! And I decided to make a film about this tragedy. I perfectly understood that the film would end up a harsh one. I decided that the central role of the village lad Flyora would not be played by a professional actor, who upon immersion into a difficult role could have protected himself psychologically with his accumulated acting experience, technique and skill. I wanted to find a simple boy fourteen years of age. We had to prepare him for the most difficult experiences, then capture them on film. And at the same time, we had to protect him from the stresses so that he wasn't left in the loony bin after filming was over, but was returned to his mother alive and healthy. Fortunately, with Aleksey Kravchenko, who played Flyora and who later became a good actor, everything went smoothly. I understood that this would be a very brutal film and that it was unlikely that people would be able to watch it. I told this to my screenplay coauthor, the writer Ales Adamovich. But he replied: "Let them not watch it, then. This is something we must leave after us. As evidence of war, and as a plea for peace. " —  Elem Klimov Come and See was shot only on Belarusian soil. The events with the people, the peasants, actually happened as shown in the film. [It] doesn't have any professional actors. Even the language spoken in the film is Belarusian. What was important was that all the events depicted in the film really did happen in Belarus. [17] For eight years, [14] filming could not begin because the State Committee for Cinematography (Goskino) would not accept the screenplay, considering it too realistic, calling it propaganda for the "aesthetics of dirtiness" and "naturalism". [16] Eventually in 1984, Klimov was able to start filming without having compromised to any censorship at all. The only change became the name of the film itself, which was changed to Come and See from the original title, Kill Hitler [18] (Elem Klimov also says this in the 2006 UK DVD release). [19] The film was shot in chronological order over a period of nine months. [18] Aleksey Kravchenko said that he underwent "the most debilitating fatigue and hunger. I kept a most severe diet, and after the filming was over I returned to school not only thin, but grey-haired. " [20] [18] To prepare the 13-year-old Kravchenko for the role, Klimov called a hypnotist. " I realized I had to inject him with content which he did not possess, Mr. Klimov said. This is an age when a boy does not know what true hatred is, what true love is. In the end, Mr. Kravchenko was able to concentrate so intensely that it seemed as if he had hypnotized himself for the role. " [21] [18] To create the maximum sense of immediacy, realism, hyperrealism, and surrealism operate in equal measure. [22] Klimov and his cameraman Rodionov employed naturalistic colours, widescreen and lots of Steadicam shots; the film is full of extreme close-ups of faces, does not flinch from the unpleasant details of burnt flesh and bloodied corpses, and the guns were often loaded with live ammunition as opposed to blanks. [3] [18] [23] [24] Aleksey Kravchenko mentioned in interviews that bullets sometimes passed just 4 inches (10 centimeters) above his head [18] (such as in the cow scene). [3] At the same time "the mise-en-scène is fragmentary and disjointed: there are discontinuities between shots as characters appear in close up and then disappear off camera. " "Klimov employs a range of techniques that draws attention to the camera. The extreme close-ups of actors staring into camera is a recurring motif. " "Elsewhere... the moment of revelation is marked by a disorienting zoom-in/dolly-out shot". [3] The film was released on 17 October 1985, [6] drawing 28. 9 million viewers [18] [25] and ranking sixth at the box office of 1986. [25] In 2017, the film received an official restoration which won the Venice classics award for Best restored film, and was also shown in several European independent cinemas again. [26] [27] [28] In the United States, Kino Lorber released the film on DVD in 2001. It is currently out-of-print. As of September 2019, the film became available on the streaming service for the Criterion Collection, the Criterion Channel. On December 18, 2019, Janus Films released a trailer for an upcoming 2k-restoration that’s expected to premiere in February of 2020 with a theatrical run and then, possibly, a restored home media release through Criterion. [29] [30] [31] Music [ edit] The original soundtrack is rhythmically amorphous music composed by Oleg Yanchenko. At a few key points in the film classical music from mainly German or Austrian composers are used, such as Johann Strauss Jr. 's Blue Danube, sometimes mixed in with Yanchenko's music. The Soviet marching song The Sacred War, Russian folk song Korobeiniki and German folk song Im Wald im grünen Walde are played in the movie once. The German military march "Old Comrades " is played as the German army begins its attack on the village. During the scene where Glasha dances, the background music is taken from Grigori Aleksandrov 's 1936 film Circus. At the end, during the montage, music by Richard Wagner is used, most notably the Tannhäuser Overture and the Ride from Die Walküre. At the conclusion of the film the Lacrimosa from Mozart 's Requiem is played. Themes [ edit] It has often been noted how the film mixes a ruthless "hyper-realistic" take on the Holocaust during Operation Barbarossa, while at the same time hinting an underlying surrealist atmosphere without being "unreal". [32] [33] [34] [35] [36] [37] The image of Hitler shown in the film as a baby sitting on the maternal knees has no historical foundation. It is a photomontage devised by Klimov between this picture of infant Hitler and that of his mother A Focke-Wulf Fw 189, the aircraft that Klimov makes fly high above the protagonists' head The film mixes themes about philosophical existentialism, spiritual degradation, the human mind, etc, under Nazi carnage, extreme trauma, and also the politics behind the Nazi-German warfare, —with often poetic, classical apocalyptic themes, influences and "twilight state-like" or nightmarish, psychological dialogues. [38] [39] [40] [41] [42] [43] The film has been praised for how it shows one of human history's worst crimes with an honest and genuine take, rather than the more common, sentimental "Hollywood take" on the subject. The film's settings is often in vast, deep Belorussian forests and swamps. The nature (with both the hostility and fear and the peacefulness and beauty that can be found in it) plays a big role in the movie's symbolism and atmosphere. Politically it deals with the people's suffering under the Nazi invasion, and the essence and depth of the people's (both collective and individual) trauma, and also honoring the defense of the Slavic nations by partisans. As an anti-fascist and anti-war movie it brings up the ideological driving-forces behind the war on (and Holocaust in) Eastern Europe; i. e the Nazis' racial ideological hatred for so-called " Judeo-Bolshevism " as one of the main motives behind their genocides against Jews and Slavs. Come and See has been praised for the way it shows the Nazis on the Eastern Front as genocidal as they historically documented were, and for how it brings out the genuine sense of terror that people in reality felt with the mere presence of those forces. It shows their systematic calculated killings and their discretionary sadism. Klimov is said to make the viewer understand, and sense, what Fascism brought, in a metaphor of a "black plague", in similar style to the partisan song "The Sacred War" and it's lyrics' description of it (i. e "the fascist hordes' black wings" and similar writings), which is also featured in the film. The movie is generally viewed as one of the most important anti-war movies ever made, one of the great movies in history and one with the most historically accurate depictions of the crimes on the Eastern Front, and in general one of the most important Holocaust movies. [44] [45] [46] [47] [48] [49] Reception [ edit] Initial reception was positive. Walter Goodman wrote for The New York Times that "The history is harrowing and the presentation is graphic... Powerful material, powerfully rendered... ", and dismissed the ending as "a dose of instant inspirationalism, " but conceded to Klimov's "unquestionable talent. " [50] Rita Kempley of the Washington Post wrote that "directing with an angry eloquence, [Klimov] taps into that hallucinatory nether world of blood and mud and escalating madness that Francis Ford Coppola found in Apocalypse Now. And though he draws a surprisingly vivid performance from his inexperienced teen lead, Klimov's prowess is his visual poetry, muscular and animistic, like compatriot Andrei Konchalovsky 's in his epic Siberiade. " [51] Mark Le Fanu wrote in Sight & Sound 03/01/1987 that Come and See is a "powerful war film... The director has elicited an excellent performance from his central actor Kravchenko". [52] [53] [54] [55] [56] [57] According to Klimov, the film was so shocking for audiences, however, that ambulances were sometimes called in to take away particularly impressionable viewers, both in the Soviet Union and abroad. [14] [19] Also according to Klimov, during one of the after-the-film discussions, an elderly German stood up and said: "I was a soldier of the Wehrmacht; moreover, an officer of the Wehrmacht. I traveled through all of Poland and Belarus, finally reaching Ukraine. I will testify: everything that is told in this film is the truth. And the most frightening and shameful thing for me is that this film will be seen by my children and grandchildren". [58] The film has since been widely acclaimed in the 21st century. In 2001, Daneet Steffens of Entertainment Weekly wrote that "Klimov alternates the horrors of war with occasional fairy tale-like images; together they imbue the film with an unapologetically disturbing quality that persists long after the credits roll. " [59] In 2001, J. Hoberman of The Village Voice reviewed Come and See, writing the following: "Directed for baroque intensity, Come and See is a robust art film with aspirations to the visionary – not so much graphic as leisurely literal-minded in its representation of mass murder. (The movie has been compared both to Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, and it would not be surprising to learn that Steven Spielberg had screened it before making either of these. ) The film's central atrocity is a barbaric circus of blaring music and barking dogs in which a squadron of drunken German soldiers round up and parade the peasants to their fiery doom... The bit of actual death-camp corpse footage that Klimov uses is doubly disturbing in that it retrospectively diminishes the care with which he orchestrates the town's destruction. For the most part, he prefers to show the Gorgon as reflected in Perseus 's shield. There are few images more indelible than the sight of young Alexei Kravchenko's fear-petrified expression. " [60] In the same publication in 2009, Elliott Stein described Come and See as "a startling mixture of lyrical poeticism and expressionist nightmare. " [61] In 2002, Scott Tobias of The A. V. Club wrote that Klimov's "impressions are unforgettable: the screaming cacophony of a bombing run broken up by the faint sound of a Mozart fugue, a dark, arid field suddenly lit up by eerily beautiful orange flares, German troops appearing like ghosts out of the heavy morning fog. A product of the glasnost era, Come and See is far from a patriotic memorial of Russia's hard-won victory. Instead, it's a chilling reminder of that victory's terrible costs. " [62] British magazine The Word wrote that " Come and See is widely regarded as the finest war film ever made, though possibly not by Great Escape fans. " [63] Tim Lott wrote in 2009 that the film "makes Apocalypse Now look lightweight". [64] In 2006, Geoffrey Macnab of Sight & Sound opined, "Klimov's astonishing war movie combines intense lyricism with the kind of violent bloodletting that would make even Sam Peckinpah pause. " [3] [ failed verification] On 16 June 2010, Roger Ebert posted a review of Come and See as part of his "Great Movies" series, describing it as "one of the most devastating films ever about anything, and in it, the survivors must envy the dead... The film depicts brutality and is occasionally very realistic, but there's an overlay of muted nightmarish exaggeration... I must not describe the famous sequence at the end. It must unfold as a surprise for you. It pretends to roll back history. You will see how. It is unutterably depressing, because history can never undo itself, and is with us forever. " [65] Come and See appears on many lists of films considered the best. In 2008, Come and See was placed at number 60 on Empire magazine's "The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time" in 2008. [66] It also made Channel 4's list of 50 Films to See Before You Die [67] and was ranked number 24 in Empire magazine's "The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema" in 2010. [68] Phil de Semlyen of Empire has described the work as "Elim Klimov’s seriously influential, deeply unsettling Belarusian opus. No film – not Apocalypse Now, not Full Metal Jacket – spells out the dehumanising impact of conflict more vividly, or ferociously... An impressionist masterpiece and possibly the worst date movie ever. " [69] It ranked 154 among critics, and 30 among directors, in the 2012 Sight & Sound polls of the greatest films ever made. [70] Rotten Tomatoes reported a 96% approval critic response based on 23 reviews. [6] Klimov did not make any more films after Come and See, [71] leading some critics to speculate as to why. In 2001, Klimov said "I lost interest in making films... Everything that was possible I felt I had already done. Judge Thomas and Judge Scalia were my favorite Justice who follow the Constitution. Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own words. Movies | ‘Created Equal’ Review: A Justice of Few Words Finds His Voice Clarence Thomas is usually silent on the Supreme Court, but he had plenty to say to some friendly filmmakers. Credit... Manifold Productions Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words Directed by Michael Pack Documentary PG-13 1h 56m The most obvious selling point of “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words” also happens to be its most conspicuous deficiency. Thomas has distinguished himself with his silence on the Supreme Court; in 2016, he asked his first question from the bench in a decade. (Three years later, he asked another. ) Speaking directly to the camera in “Created Equal, ” Thomas is veritably chatty, reminiscing about his childhood, extolling the work of Ayn Rand, smiling wryly at his own quips. The producers, Michael Pack and Gina Cappo Pack, spent more than 30 hours interviewing Thomas and his wife, Virginia. Simply getting to watch Thomas expound on his thoughts for an extended length of time constitutes its own kind of novelty — a surprise that begins to wear off when it becomes clear that Thomas will mostly be rehashing the life story he already recounted in his 2007 memoir, “My Grandfather’s Son. ” That memoir was a fascinating document — shrewdly evasive yet occasionally revealing. This new film, by contrast, is about as revelatory as a campaign ad. The only talking heads are Thomas’s and Virginia’s; no other perspectives are offered. Funders for the project include conservative foundations belonging to the Kochs and the Scaifes. Michael Pack, who also directed the film, has written in praise of Stephen K. Bannon’s cultural production efforts. “Documentaries, ” Pack wrote in 2017, “have been the almost exclusive playground of the Left. ” Thomas recounts the major moments in an undeniably eventful life. He supported the black power movement in the ’60s and ’70s and voted for Ronald Reagan in 1980; his conservative turn, he says, was the inevitable reaction to liberal hypocrisy. Clips of Anita Hill testifying at Thomas’s confirmation hearings in 1991 appear in the second half of the film, after the filmmakers have taken care not to disturb their admiring portrait of Thomas as a faithful Christian and doting family man. Hill’s recollections of sexual harassment get predictably cast as part of a feminist smear campaign designed to destroy him. But the overriding tenor of this documentary is triumphant and upbeat. Thomas’s journey is intermittently visualized by footage from inside a boat as it makes its way through marshy wetlands before arriving, just as the sun is setting, at a sturdy dock. If “Created Equal” is trying to promote the conservative cause, it does so gently, and blandly. The only moment of mild discomfort occurs when the filmmakers ask Thomas about the end of his first marriage. The otherwise voluble Thomas signals that he’ll be having none of it, turning momentarily awkward and taciturn: “Yeah, it was, you know, you live with it. ” Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words Rated PG-13 for the unavoidable segment on sexual harassment. Running time: 1 hour 56 minutes.

After that, I KNEW who the ENEMY was, and that enemy every day confirms since that fight their hatred, poutiness, racism, injustice, violence, selfishness, bitterness, idiocy, totalitarianism, and over the last five years, horniness. The Global/Left/Dem Axis is by far the greatest danger to the USA, its citizens, and its Constitution. Thomas stood tall against the whole machine like the island of Malta besieged for ages.
